Recruitment call for Biomedical Research Ethics Board member knowledgeable in law

The University of Saskatchewan Human Research Ethics Boards are seeking new members.

Research Ethics Boards (REB) are responsible for the review of the ethical acceptability of research under the auspices of or within the jurisdiction of the University of Saskatchewan. The University of Saskatchewan REBs adhere to the Tri Council Policy Statement on the Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans – TCPS2 (2022) and, where required, to provincial, national, and international guidelines and regulations. Ultimately, the REB is responsible for ensuring that the safety and integrity of all human participants in research are respected and protected.

Currently, the Biomedical REB (Bio-REB) is seeking a member knowledgeable in law. The role of the member knowledgeable in the law is to alert REBs to legal issues and their implications (e.g., privacy issues), not to provide formal legal opinions or to serve as legal counsel for the REB.

The commitment to the board would be for a three-year period typically requiring attendance at one meeting every other month. There are two Biomedical REBs, one board meets the first Wednesday of the month and the other board meets the third Wednesday of the month. This vacancy is with REB-1, which meets on the first Wednesday of the month. There is approximately 3-6 hours of preparation (reading) and the meetings themselves are around 2-3 hours long. Members are typically appointed for a three year term, however if agreeable to both parties, membership could be extended.
