Robert McKercher, K.C., who passed away on December 15, was a highly respected lawyer, business leader, and lifelong supporter of the Canadian Bar Association (CBA). His legacy within the legal profession and the broader business community is both profound and enduring.

Mr. McKercher began his legal career in 1952 upon graduating from law school. In 1961, he joined his brother in practice, and over the years, the firm grew in prominence, ultimately becoming McKercher LLP in 2008—a name synonymous with excellence in Saskatchewan’s legal community. In recognition of his professional achievements and dedication to the law, he was awarded the King's Counsel designation in 1966.

Within the Canadian Bar Association, Mr. McKercher’s contributions were exceptional. He served two terms as President of the CBA Saskatchewan Branch from 1966 to 1968 and went on to become the 55th President of the Canadian Bar Association nationally—a distinction achieved by only three individuals from Saskatchewan. His leadership and vision at both the provincial and national levels left a lasting impact on the association and its members.

In 1997, Mr. McKercher was honored with the CBA Saskatchewan Distinguished Service Award, reflecting his outstanding commitment to advancing the legal profession and his tireless support for the values and mission of the CBA.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Mr. McKercher was deeply committed to legal education and youth engagement. He was instrumental in establishing the McKercher Cup, awarded annually to the winning team of the CBA Saskatchewan Provincial High School Mock Trial Competition. This initiative exemplified his dedication to inspiring the next generation of legal professionals and fostering a passion for justice among young people.

CBA Saskatchewan expresses its deepest sympathies to Mr. McKercher’s family, friends, and colleagues. His remarkable contributions to the legal profession, the Canadian Bar Association, and his community will be remembered and cherished for years to come.
