The Canadian Bar Association, Saskatchewan Branch (CBASK) is launching a student op-ed contest related to Indigenous and/or Aboriginal law. The objective of the op-ed contest is to promote interest in and writing about Indigenous and/or Aboriginal law topics by students at the University of Saskatchewan’s College of Law.
TOPIC QUESTION 2023:
The CBASK invites University of Saskatchewan’s College of Law students to submit an op-ed based on the following question:
Should Saskatchewan pass framework legislation, similar to British Columbia’s Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act or Canada’s United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act? Why or why not?
CRITERIA & ELIGIBILITY
The award is presented annually for the best op-ed submitted to CBASK. An op-ed represents a strong, informed, and focused opinion of the writer on an issue of relevance scoped by the op-ed topic question.
Op-ed submissions must adhere to the following guidelines:
- Submissions submitted for consideration should address the topic as outlined each year. In any given year, CBASK may call for submissions related to specific topical themes and will make compliance with the theme a condition of eligibility for the year.
- Op-ed submissions must be the author’s original work. Op-ed papers submitted for a law school course are eligible, as are those prepared for a conference or symposium. Op-ed submissions previously published in an academic journal or prepared for a professional development course are not eligible.
- Op-ed submissions:
- be a maximum of 1000 words
- have a clearly defined point and point of view
- focus on your analysis to define your point and point of view; do not simply list facts
- core premise is obvious in the first sentence or paragraph
- contains the strong, unique voice of the writer
- references/footnotes should be sited using the McGill Guide
- Format: 12pt, Times New Roman, double spaced (excludes bio)
- Submitted as a Word document
- Bio: Include your full name, pronouns, contact email and phone number. You may include a 2–3 line bio introducing yourself.
This competition is restricted to full-time or part-time students enrolled at the University of Saskatchewan, College of Law as of April 4, 2023.
AWARD
The author of the chosen article will be awarded a cash prize of $1,000.00. The op-ed will be posted on the CBA Saskatchewan website and published in BarNotes.
SELECTION CRITERIA
Submitted papers will be reviewed by the Essay Committee led by the CBASK Outreach Director.
